Anonymous asked: I would like to write but if I'm brutally honest with myself, deep down I want to write for the sake of writing and having accomplished something rather than for the NEED to write. Also, I haven't started anything yet, because I dismiss all my ideas as derivative or not interesting enough. So, are those above bad reasons to write? Should I wait until I feel that I really need to get something out and that will also solve the ideas problem? Thank you.
I know I answer a lot of questions like this but I get so many and I feel compelled to answer.
I’m going to be blunt… spoilers ahead….
we’re all going to die one day.
wouldn’t you like to have expressed yourself while you were here? wouldn’t you like to get something done? close your eyes and imagine the perfect version of yourself and try to be that with everything that you have. if for you that involves being a writer then you can’t just sit around and wait for some great idea to pop into your head.
you need to sit down and write. right now.
you have no idea how good of a writer you are or how much work you need to do to become that good of a writer. you have to sit down and work. they say that most of us have 10,000 hours of bad work or a thousand bad pages inside of us before we can get to the good ones. you need to get to it.
someone else is doing it right now. someone else is trying to live your dream of being a writer by working really hard. there is no reason it shouldn’t be you.
